Sparke Helmore Lawyers and Jarman McKenna have announced a merger designed to give insurance clients a national presence.

Perth-based insurance specialist Jarman McKenna and its 52 staff will join the 650-strong Sparke Helmore Lawyers team, confirmed Piet Jarman, founding partner of the firm.

Jarman noted that the move follows a trend in the insurance law industry to increase to a national footprint and will provide clients with a stronger service.

“It is a client-driven move,” Jarman told Insurance Business.

“We have been discussing with Sparke Helmore the opportunities that might arise from joining together for probably nine months and we chose Sparke Helmore as one of the leading insurance firms in Western Australia and, we thought, the leading firm in Australia.

“Providing national coverage is the big advantage of the merger.”

Leading legal publication Australasian Lawyer reported that merger talks between the two firms have been progressing since a term sheet was signed in early September.

The combined firm, which will retain the Sparke Helmore Lawyers name, will provide national insurance law capability and coverage for insurers, underwriters, re-insurers, brokers, agents and insureds throughout Australia.
