Wotton + Kearney (W + K), a law firm specialising in insurance and risk in Australasia, has announced the establishment of an aviation practice led by newly hired special counsel James Cooper.

Cooper (pictured), who previously served at Clyde & Co, has now taken up his role in the Melbourne office of W + K.

Who is James Cooper?

Cooper brings extensive expertise in aviation, maritime, and energy law, with a notable record in both litigious and advisory capacities.

He has represented clients in several high-profile aviation cases, including incidents involving Malaysia Airlines flights MH370 and MH17, as well as Qantas flights QF30 and QF72. His areas of practice include major airline losses, leasing disputes, general aviation disputes, and claims related to personal injury, hull, cargo, and baggage.

His role also includes providing regulatory, commercial, and compliance counsel, particularly in addressing the emerging challenges posed by drone technology.

This addition aims to bolster W + K’s marine and transport practice, which already covers areas such as shipping, road, rail, logistics, mining, and commodity trading.

Adam Chylek, head of property, energy and infrastructure at the firm, highlighted Cooper's comprehensive experience and his strong reputation across various regions.

“James brings a unique skillset to the firm and is an exciting addition to our existing transport practice. He has a wealth of experience across the sector, and is highly regarded in Australia and New Zealand and across the Asia-Pacific and London markets,” he said.

“I’m really excited to have joined Wotton + Kearney where my specialised aviation practice fits neatly alongside the firm’s insurance and risk focus,” Cooper said. “I’m looking forward to working with the firm to grow the regional aviation practice.”

The introduction of the aviation practice marks a significant expansion of the firm’s expertise and service offerings in the region. This month, several of the firm’s insurance lawyers were acknowledged for their expertise, being named among the Best Lawyers for Australia for 2025.
