QBE Australia has announced the appointment of a newly created role as national manager of marine specialty risks (MSR).

Tim Air has been appointed to the role, effective December 8, having joined the business in 2011 and has more than 25 years’ experience in the marine insurance market having worked across underwriting, claims and sales.

General manager of marine specialty risk, Neil Hiller, will leave the business in the New Year, the company said, to “take up a new opportunity.”

Chris Harnett, QBE Australia’s general manager of specialty, said that the promotion of Air shows the strength in depth of the company.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming Tim to the Specialty leadership team and working with him to identify ways to further grow our MSR business in Australia,” Harnett said.

“Tim’s skills are well aligned to the objectives of this role, and his expertise will be key as we continue to focus on our existing partnerships and develop growth opportunities in the Marine insurance space.”

Harnett also praised Hiller for his contribution to the company.

“On behalf of the whole team at QBE I’d like to thank Neil for his contribution to QBE over the past six years and wish him well for the future,” Harnett continued.

Prior to taking on this new role, Air was QBE’s underwriting manager for marine in Victoria and Tasmania.

Air will continue to be based in the Melbourne office of the business.
